Running Stitch Video Tutorial

LEVEL: Easy

USE: Outlines, lettering, as a base for other stitches, hand sewing

OTHER NAMES: Point Avant, Punto de Basta

The running stitch is one of the easiest stitches, and probably the first one you will learn. As a more advanced stitcher, you might be tempted to underestimate this simple stitch, but it can really bring your project to life, especially when used as a base for other stitches.

The running stitch can be worked on any kind of fabric and any thread. In the video tutorial, I am using DMC Stranded Cotton on linen blend fabric.

The running stitch creates a dotted line. When working on taut fabric you need to produce each stitch with two actions. When working on loose fabric, out of the frame, you can produce several stitches at a time.

Step 1

Come up from the back and create a Straight Stitch.

Step 2

Come again up and create another Straight Stitch, leaving a small gap between your stitches.

TIP: The key for a harmonious running stitch is to space the stitches evenly and keep them all same length.

In the photos below, I used the running stitch to embroider the white small details for the royal owl pattern from the book Whitework with color by Trish Burr.

The running stitch can be used as a base for more complex stitches as the Whipped Running Stitch and Double Running Stitch.  You can use it to create intricate geometric bands and filling patterns, or just a fancy outline when combined with different thread colors.
