It’s always been my dream to start a business in a creative field but I was always so scared to give it a go as I didn’t feel like my work was good enough for someone to invest in. Through Instagram, I’m slowly building a following and am so overwhelmed when people comment and like my posts.
Georgia Thomas, owner of G’s Embroideries
Tell us a bit about yourself
Hi, My name is Georgia and I own G’s Embroideries, a small independent embroidery and illustration business.
The name of my business is a mix of my name and embroidery – not fooling anyone with that one!
I’m from Worcester and work full-time in administration for a well-known vacuum brand. Very very different from my creative side!
How and why did you start your business/brand?
G’s Embroideries started in lockdown 1 here in the UK, to begin with it was purely something to keep me busy and occupy my brain!
I have lots of art materials as I studied textiles for fashion at university, so thought I’d put them to good use!
From there I made an Instagram account to showcase my work and then opened an Etsy store. I also complete commission-based work via direct messages on Instagram and word of mouth.
Share challenges in running your business and how you coped
The hardest part of running my small business is patience (embroidery can take a long long time!) and balancing it with my full-time job.
To turn this into a full-time career is my overall goal and I hope people continue to invest in and follow my business so I can achieve that.
What is your vision, and why is this important to you?
My aim is to build a successful small business based around embroidery and illustration that can be used both commercially and personally.
It’s always been my dream to start a business in a creative field but I was always so scared to give it a go as I didn’t feel like my work was good enough for someone to invest in.
Through Instagram I’m slowly building a following and am so overwhelmed when people comment and like my posts!
It’s so humbling to know that people are interested to see my work and even more so when someone chooses to purchase something from me.
It really is never too late to chase a dream!
What inspires you/your work?
I concentrate on combining my love of interior design, embroidery and plants by creating detailed hand embroidered pieces and fun colourful prints.
If you want to check out my work please go to my Instagram account @gsembroideries and of course any commission inquiries, just drop me a DM or an email!
