Interview with Winnie from Miu Embroidery

I want to make embroidery that looks cool. It’s a traditional craft that I believe deserves much more appreciation, especially form the younger generation.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi, My name is Winnie from Hua Hin, Thailand. I’m the owner of Miu Embroidery.

Many people thought my name is Miu, actually, it was the name of my first cat. She passed away due to leukemia, couple of months before I started the business.

I wanted her in my life much longer even just with the name, plus it’s easy to remember. As for the “Embroidery” part, it’s quite obvious.

How and why did you start your business?

COVID kinda started all this. Last year I lost my full-time job due to the COVID outbreak. During those self-quarantine times, I was bored and overwhelmed, spent a lot of time watching videos online, and came across an embroidery video on YouTube, then I thought maybe I could do it too.

Then a few days later, I uploaded my first video on YouTube and started this channel: Miu Embroidery,  also a company and website selling patterns, DIY kits, and embroidery supplies.

What is your vision, and why is this important to you?

I want to make embroidery that looks cool. It’s a traditional craft that I believe deserves much more appreciation, especially from the younger generation.

It’s definitely not a hobby for grannies only. With just a needle and thread, you can make special home decorations and gifts, personalize your clothes, or even artworks more beautiful than painting.

What inspires you and your work?

My inspiration comes from paintings. I used to paint a lot, mostly oil and acrylic, then storage became a big problem.

Embroidery is a good solution for me.  I use a lot of painting techniques in my embroidery works, and I’ve made a few different types so far, landscape, food, portrait, and pet.

Can you share some challenges in running your business and how you’re coping?

The beginning is always the most difficult. Without experience in editing and filming, I ended up with a video usually 4-5 hours long, and I edited it into 10 minutes. Took me ages doing that. And the worst part is nobody even watches those videos.

But instead of giving up, I started to challenge myself and make more difficult embroidery works, then subscribers increased.

Any fun customer stories you’d like to share with us?

Usually, I receive commission offers online, but not long time ago a walk-in to my studio, it was a dog portrait.

When I handed over the finished piece to my client, I saw the spark of joy in her eyes, and that melts my heart.
