Double Running Stitch Video Tutorial

LEVEL: Easy

USE: Lines, outlines, in Assisi and blackwork

OTHER NAMES: Assisi Stitch, Holbein Stitch

Double running stitch is a variation of the simple Running Stitch. It is also known as the Holbein stitch or the Assisi stitch. It can be used to create simple outlines, intricate fillings, and geometric patterns. It’s a stitch worked ideally on even-weave fabric.

The main benefits of the double running stitch:

  • It uses less thread
  • The back of your work will look the same as the front.

Step 1

You start by creating a line of running stitches.

Remember to be consistent, make the stitches the same length and make sure the spaces between them are equal in length to stitches.

Step 2

On the return journey, working in the opposite direction, fill in the spaces between the stitches with another running stitch row. You will come up at the top of the previous stitch and go down below the start of the next stitch.

For the return journey, you can use the same color, or as I did in the example above, you can choose a contrasting color for a fancier effect. When creating intricate geometric patterns keep in mind to use squared paper.
